Connectivity and Networking Terms

API (Application Programming Interface)

A set of rules that lets two software applications talk to each other. In smart homes, APIs let third-party apps and services connect to your devices — for example, linking a lighting system to a calendar app.

Bridge / Hub

A central device that translates between different wireless protocols so incompatible devices can work together. A hub might connect Zigbee sensors to your Wi-Fi router, making them visible in a single app.

Mesh Network

A network where each device relays signals for others, extending coverage without a single central point of failure. Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Thread all use mesh networking to improve range and reliability.

Matter

An open-source connectivity standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) that allows smart devices from different manufacturers to work together across ecosystems like Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa.

Zigbee

A low-power wireless protocol designed for short-range, mesh-networked smart home devices such as bulbs, sensors, and locks. Zigbee operates on the 2.4 GHz band and requires a hub or bridge to connect to your main network.

Z-Wave

A wireless protocol similar in purpose to Zigbee but operating on sub-1 GHz frequencies, which reduces interference with Wi-Fi. Z-Wave devices also require a hub and are typically limited to 232 devices per network.

Thread

An IP-based mesh networking protocol designed specifically for smart home devices. Unlike Zigbee, Thread routes internet protocol traffic natively and is a key transport layer for the Matter standard.

Bluetooth LE (BLE)

Bluetooth Low Energy is a short-range, energy-efficient wireless standard used in many smart home devices, particularly locks and sensors. Its range is typically limited to about 30 feet without signal repeaters.

Local Processing

When a smart device or hub processes commands and automations on-device or on a local server rather than sending data to the cloud. Local processing generally improves speed, privacy, and reliability during internet outages.

Cloud Processing

When a device sends data to a manufacturer's remote server to process commands or run automations. Cloud-dependent devices may stop working if the company discontinues its service or if your internet connection drops.

Automation / Routine

A pre-programmed rule that triggers one or more device actions based on a condition — such as time of day, sensor state, or another device's status. Most smart home platforms use 'routine,' 'scene,' or 'automation' interchangeably, though the exact feature sets vary.

Scene

A saved combination of device settings that can be activated with a single command. For example, a 'Movie Night' scene might dim lights, lower blinds, and set the thermostat simultaneously.
